Ready to take your skiing beyond the resort?

Our 5-day Introduction to Ski Touring course is designed for experienced skiers who want to explore the more remote areas of Australia’s pristine backcountry. Based from a main snow camp, you’ll spend four nights camping in alpine conditions while learning the essential skills to safely tackle multi-day backcountry missions.

With a flexible itinerary, this course adapts to the dynamic nature of alpine weather and snow conditions, ensuring a safe and rewarding experience, regardless of what Mother Nature throws our way.

This five day course will teach the skills necessary to:

• Select and prepare backcountry ski gear
• Master the techniques for ‘skinning up’ and ‘skiing down’ in varied conditions
• Interpret weather forecasts and understand the risks associated with alpine weather
• Assess and mitigate avalanche hazards, including practical avalanche rescue techniques
• Use advanced alpine navigation skills to confidently move through remote terrain
• Plan and prepare for extended alpine ski adventures
• Safely assess and manage hazards in alpine environments
• Ski with a heavy pack and build your endurance for longer trips
• Camp in alpine conditions, with skills in shelter building and snow safety

By the end of this course, you’ll have the skills and confidence to head into the backcountry on multi-day adventures, equipped to navigate, assess risks and enjoy the challenges of skiing in the wilderness.

Course prerequisites:

• Must be physically fit, free of injury and be able to carry a heavy pack for long periods of time in varying weather conditions.
• Have proven resort or off-piste skiing experience and be fully competent
• Be over the age of 18
• Regularly participate in outdoor recreation activities and be able to source the mandatory personal equipment required for this course
